How to Scribe Cabinet Fillets Accurately
Accurate scribing is essential when fitting cabinets, wardrobes and other fitted furniture against uneven walls. The Scribe-Mate jig system is designed to help tradespeople mark, cut and fit scribe fillets accurately using a controlled and repeatable setup.
This guide explains how Scribe-Mate jigs are used for side, top and bottom scribes, including cabinets with and without pre-drilled hinge plate holes, and how to deal with small steps between cabinet panels.
Using Scribe-Mate for Side Scribes
Side scribes are commonly required when fitting cabinets against uneven walls. Scribe-Mate jigs are positioned vertically to secure the fillet while the scribe line is marked.
Before offering the fillet to the jigs, the location plate must be removed. Location pins should always face into the cabinet to ensure correct alignment.
For longer fillets, a third jig can be used to provide additional support along the length of the scribe.
Cabinets With Pre-Drilled Hinge Plate Holes
When working with cabinets that have pre-drilled hinge plate holes, Scribe-Mate jigs can be used with both 5mm and 3mm diameter holes. The jigs locate securely, allowing the scribe line to be marked accurately before cutting.
Cabinets Without Pre-Drilled Holes
For cabinets without pre-drilled hinge plate holes, jig shoulders are used in the cabinet corners. This allows the jig to sit correctly without fixings.
Ensure the location pins are facing into the cabinet, and remove the location plate before offering the fillet to the jigs.
Using Scribe-Mate for Top and Bottom Scribes
Scribe-Mate jigs are also used for top and bottom scribes, positioned horizontally along the cabinet rail.
As with side scribes, the location plate must be removed before offering the fillet to the jigs. For longer runs, a third jig can be used to maintain stability and accuracy when marking the scribe line.
Overcoming Steps Between Cabinet Panels
It is not uncommon for a small step to be present between cabinet sides, tops or bottom panels. This can affect the accuracy of a scribe if not addressed.
To overcome this situation:
-
Establish the size of the step
-
Select shim(s) of identical thickness
-
Place the shim(s) between each jig and the fillet
-
Mark the scribe line and cut
Using shims allows the scribe line to be transferred accurately despite variations in panel alignment.
